Default Reading Players

Who has some good tips on reading opponents? I have struggled with this art in the past, and it really holds me back from getting better.

It really depends on the person you're trying to read. For example, when I play I like to use my apparent inexperience to try and confuse my opponents. I'll say things like "how much do I have to put in?" or "how much are the green chips worth again?". I also try and use the fact that I'm not really interested in winning to lure my opponents into a false sense of security. Of course, if they can see through that, then I'm the one in trouble.

But really how much does this matter in lower limit holdem? In the higher limits there's more at stake so people care more.. much harder to read in lower limits

you have to play with someone for awhile to be able to effectively read them.

I think observing people in general helps to really see the things people do. And doing it while not actually playing. I used to work at a bar as a second or third job....just watching people sitting around the bar was very telling once you saw the correlations between what they do and then later what they are thinking.

I have watched people play poker far more than I have played simply due to being a bartender and after watching the same ten people play for months I certainly could tell what was going to happen.

Although I do think it is different a bit when you are in the thick of things. All this knowledge is great however..it's hard to really concentrate on all of them while also concentrating on yourself. Perhaps this is also a reason some novice players lose a lot...too busy trying to figure everyone else out instead of tending to their hand.

And...some people are just hard to read. I think if you are in a casino situation...unless you plan on playing for days with the same people I think it would be difficult unless they are really bad covers. Then again...a lot of people create tells and then switch up. I've seen that happen.

Read Mike Caro's Book of Tells. It looks dated but it will still give you some good insight on what to look for when you play at a live table. When I first started playing poker, I picked up the book and read it on the plane on my way to Vegas. Amazing how much better it let me play.

Default How to read players

It is always hard to read some players. The hardest ones to read are the ones that sit there and never say anything because they act the same when they have a good or bad hand. Therefore you will always find it hard to play against these types of players. It is also difficult to read players that wear sun glasses because you can't see thier eyes, and the eyes give so much away.

The best way to learn to read players is to watch the poker on TV

Tells are just small things, that every player has, whether they know it or not. Some might have shaky hands when on a big bluff, but others might shake if they have a huge hand. Shifty eyes, gulping, they way they hold their hands, which way they are sitting, if they will look directly at you these are all tells, but its up to you how to interpret them.

I find it really hard to read people, when i think i have a tell on them i go with it. Like there was this older fellow and when he bet big he started to shake. he flipped over his cards and was holding nothing but a bluff, so next time i seen him doing that I put him all in and he snap called flipping over the nuts. Turns out his hands just start to shake when he over extends his arms. So becarefull on what you might think are tells, might not be.
