This isn't going to help you much and for that I am sorry - I've learned most of what I know from other people. Best thing that I did for my game is just for fun or low pot games, games where it's about playing not winning. The players are a lot more likely (insert beer here) to talk about how they play, i've once heard amateurs with a little know how and nerves are hard to break. Kinda goes along with that idea. My point is, I didn't read books I just played "fun" games with family and friends, now I play pretty well. Some people won't play me, they think I cheat, I swear I don't lol.

Try Phil Gordon's books. The Little Green Book, and the Little Blue Book are the best, and there's also a boxed set with those two and The Little Black Book. Tons of strategy, tactics, and sample hands but not too ponderous or overly mathematical. I highly recommend them.

Best book on poker strategies is PRACTICE .
Try every freeroll and if you feel confident advance to the buy in tables.

There are a couple books that I would like to reccomend. The first is Phil Helmuth. Yes i know hes a pain. But would he be where hes at today stickly on luck. I dont think so either. He teaches some really good fundamentals about the game and gets into more advanced strategies as well. I used to be an aggresive player but a book that helped me especially with live cash games where patience is a virtue is called Zen: the Art of Poker. That book has helped me alot. Or if you are an extremely aggressive player like I was bring a book or a game to keep you busy so you dont get involved in too many hands. The fewer amount of hands you play, the less its possible to lose. (just my opinion)
